Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya is brain dead, his party leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has said in a clarification following the youthful legislator’s death announcement. Muhammad Ssegirinya brain death reports have left many confused on what that means.
According to Bobi Wine, Muhammad Ssegirinya brain death has been compounded by failure of other vital organs.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) boss urged Ugandans to pray for a miracle. It was based on the reports that Muhammad Ssegirinya was brain dead and that most of his organs had shut down that the MP’s mother alerted NUP that ‘Mr Update’ had passed on.
Rubaga Hospital acting Executive Director Sr Dr Grace Nanyondo said Muhammad Ssegirinya was yet to be pronounced dead.
As far as she and Rubaga Hospital were concerned, Muhammad Ssegirinya was critically sick and needed “our love” and prayers.
So, what does it mean to be brain dead? And, are there chances of recovery from brain death. The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK considers someone suffering brain death as being legally dead based on the realizations that survival without artificial life support systems is difficult.
“Brain death (also known as brain stem death) is when a person on an artificial life support machine no longer has any brain functions. This means they will not regain consciousness or be able to breathe without support,” explains UK’s NHS on its website.
“A person who is brain dead is legally confirmed as dead. They have no chance of recovery because their body is unable to survive without artificial life support.”
