The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has strongly denied allegations that its Executive Director, Dr. Chris Mukiza, attempted to shoot outgoing Rubanda West Member of Parliament Moses Kamuntu during a confrontation at a Kololo hotel facility on Saturday evening.
Reports circulating online had claimed that a disagreement between the two escalated into a near-shooting incident at the facility’s exit gate.
According to the allegations, the confrontation began when a vehicle said to belong to Dr. Mukiza reportedly knocked into Kamuntu’s car as he attempted to leave the premises.
Online publication Eagle claimed eyewitness accounts had further alleged that the situation quickly deteriorated into a heated verbal exchange, during which Dr. Mukiza reportedly reached into his vehicle and produced a pistol.
The alleged firearm was said to have malfunctioned, causing its magazine to fall and bullets to scatter on the ground.
It also said that witnesses claimed the incident drew attention as the bullets were later recovered from beneath the vehicle.
However, in a strongly worded response, UBOS dismissed the claims as “untrue and malicious,” accusing the publishers of fabricating the story to tarnish Dr. Mukiza’s reputation and undermine the credibility of the institution.
The bureau further criticized the article, reportedly published by Eagle Online and widely shared on platforms such as Facebook and Phoenix, describing it as defamatory and driven by sensationalism, with possible ulterior motives.
A source in the Kampala Metropolitan Policing area said no such incident had been reported at any police station within the jurisdiction.
UBOS clarified that Dr. Mukiza does not personally drive his official vehicle, noting that he is always accompanied by an official driver and a trained security detail responsible for his protection and handling of any security-related situations.
The agency also dismissed claims that Dr. Mukiza was intoxicated at the time of the alleged incident, describing them as a direct attack on his professionalism and personal integrity.
UBOS urged the public to disregard what it termed as baseless allegations and to be cautious of unverified information circulating on social media, warning against the dangers of misinformation and character assassination.
It should be remembered that recently, Dr Chris Mukiza was given an award for excellence in statistical leadership, as reported Here.
