Police in Kampala have arrested human rights activist, journalist and lawyer Agather Atuhaire and other protesters who were attempting a march to the Supreme Court.
Atuhaire accuses the Supreme Court of sitting on an appeal challenging the trial of civilians in military tribunals.
The protest comes days after the General Court Martial in Makindye assaulted, hastily convicted and sentenced lawyer Eron Kiiza to nine months in prison over attempt of court.
Kiiza is a lawyer for Dr Kizza Besigye and his aide Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya who face charges of reportedly undermining national security and unlawful possession of firearms.
Security detained Atuhaire and others at the Kampala Central Police Station.
Sandwiched between two female police officers (one uniformed, another ununiformed), Atuhaire explained why she was protesting.
“All I’m saying is that the law in this country should be followed. What we were trying to do is go to the Supreme Court to ask the Chief Justice why he has sat on cases that are affecting people’s lives. He has sat on the case for four years,” said Atuhaire.
“People are being tried in the military tribunal. A lawyer that is representing his client was picked very roughly and taken to prison.”
Atuhaire, who was previously received awards for her human rights work, was days ago involved in a war of words with Anthony Natif, another activist with whom she was in a relationship, as reported in the crossfire Here.
