A university romance has taken an interesting twist in Kabale after a student allegedly ditched his campus girlfriend and proposed to her lecturer—sparking shock, heartbreak and gossip across campus.
The drama unfolded at Uganda Christian University Bishop Barham University College, where Medard Mugumya, a Kiswahili student, is said to have abandoned his long-term lover before going on to stage a dramatic public proposal to senior lecturer Agenze Rominate Owomugisha.
Owomugisha, 36, who heads the university’s Department of Education, was reportedly left stunned when Mugumya dropped to one knee during a surprise engagement event organised in her honour.

However, behind the romantic gesture lies a tangled web of secrecy.
Campus insiders claim the pair had been involved in a covert relationship for months, all while Mugumya maintained a public romance with fellow student Vallene—who was widely regarded as his official girlfriend.
The relationship triangle is said to have taken shape in an unexpected way.

Sources allege Vallene herself unknowingly introduced Mugumya to Owomugisha, a move that would later come back to haunt her as the two reportedly grew close in private.
What began as casual interactions is said to have evolved into a hidden affair, kept firmly out of sight from fellow students and staff.
That secrecy came crashing down in spectacular fashion.
Mugumya is reported to have orchestrated an elaborate surprise engagement, publicly declaring his love for the lecturer and effectively ending any doubt about their relationship.
The public proposal sent shockwaves through the campus community.
Vallene, blindsided by the development, is said to have expressed her anguish on TikTok, sharing a video lamenting how she lost her boyfriend to a woman she trusted as her lecturer.
The love story has since dominated conversations around campus, with students divided over the controversial relationship.
Despite the backlash, Mugumya and Owomugisha appear undeterred. The pair are reportedly continuing with wedding plans and are expected to tie the knot in May 2026.
What remains unclear is whether the story will be remembered as a bold love story—or a cautionary tale of blurred boundaries and betrayal.
