Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has dedicated his 2026 Hero of Democracy award to detained opposition figure Kizza Besigye, other political prisoners, and fallen activists, in a message of resilience and hope.
Four time presidential candidate Dr Besigye has been in prison since 2024 when he was arrested from the Kenyan capital Nairobi where he and his assistant Obeid Lutale had gone to attend a boom launch.
Bobi Wine was honoured on April 17, 2026, in New York during the 2026 Heroes of Democracy Gala hosted by the Renew Democracy Initiative (RDI) at Gotham Hall. The award recognises his sustained activism and leadership in advocating for democratic governance in Uganda.
In his acceptance and subsequent message, Bobi Wine paid tribute to those he described as the true heroes of Uganda’s struggle for freedom, particularly those currently imprisoned or who have lost their lives in the cause.
“Honored to have been recognised as a Leader in Courage and Innovation (2026) by the Renew Democracy Initiative in New York City last night. I dedicate this award to the Ugandan men and women who have been killed, unfairly detained, or disappeared in our collective pursuit for a better Uganda. Their sacrifices shall certainly pray off.
I applaud my fellow Honorees: Ambassador John Bolton (US National Security Advisor 2018-19 and US Ambassador to the UN 2005-06); Ms. Chrystia Freeland (Economic Advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Deputy Prime Minister of Canada 2020-24); and Senator Mark Kelly (US Senator for Arizona and NASA Astronaut 1996-2011) for their contribution to democratic causes.
Thank you, RDI! Uganda shall be free!” he said.
He added in a separate message: “A dedication to all the comrades that have paid, and continue to pay a high price for the liberation of our motherland Uganda, your pain will never be in vain. One day everything will be alright.”
His remarks were widely interpreted as a direct message of encouragement to Dr Besigye, a veteran opposition leader who has reportedly been in detention on treason charges since 2024, alongside other political detainees.
Bobi Wine’s political party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), celebrated the recognition, praising his continued defiance and commitment to democratic ideals despite mounting political pressure.
“Special congratulations to our President H.E Bobi Wine on featuring among the ‘Leaders in courage and innovation’. He has been hailed for his bravery and unshakable optimism as we continue to strive for democracy and redeem ourselves from dictatorship,” the party said in a statement.
The award adds to Bobi Wine’s growing international recognition as a leading voice in Uganda’s opposition politics, even as the country continues to grapple with tensions over governance, civil liberties, and political dissent.
