The names of A-level schools that have dominated government sponsorship admissions under the national merit scheme have been revealed.

Up to 2,515 students have been admitted on overnment sponsorship under the national merit scheme. At least 209 schools had only one student admitted on government sponsorship under the national merit scheme, each.

A total of 493 A-level schools schools will send at least one student to public universities in Uganda in the 2025-2026 academic year.

The public universities are: Makerere University and its affiliate college of Makerere University Business School (Mubs), Gulu University, Kyambogo University, Busitema University, and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Must).

Others include Kabale University, Muni University, Soroti University, Lira University, Mountains of the Moon University and Soroti University.

Every year, Government of Uganda offers a total of 4,000 scholarships on schemes such as national merit (for brilliant students), district quota system, diploma scheme, mature age entry, special needs scheme and talent scheme.

For the national merit scheme, there are 2,515 slots this year.

Makerere University has already admitted its share of 1,405, Kyambogo University about 381 students, Mbarara University of Science and Technology 143, Gulu University 133, Busitema University 92, Kabale University 78, Mountains of the Moon University 78, Lira University 74, Muni University 73 and Soroti University 58.

In this report, we show which schools have taken the biggest number of slots under the national merit scheme of government sponsorship for the 2025-2026 academic year. Here is the number of students each school sent to public universities on government sponsorship (national merit scheme).
