The High Court sitting at the Ggaba Community Church grounds has been adjourned to Monday after heavy rains and thunderstorms disrupted proceedings in the ongoing trial of Christopher Okello Onyum.
The decision to halt the session followed severe weather conditions that caused flooding around the courtroom area, making it difficult for proceedings to continue smoothly.
The court is hearing a case in which Okello is accused of murdering four toddlers at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre.
During the afternoon session, shortly after the lunch break, conditions worsened as heavy rainfall intensified, forcing court officials to assess the situation.
The adjournment was subsequently announced as the environment became unsuitable for the continuation of the public trial.
Court clerks were seen raising their legs to avoid contact with flowing water that had drained into parts of the makeshift courtroom, highlighting the extent of disruption caused by the storm.
State prosecution also told court that the next witness it was supposed to present needed the setup of screens to to enable presentation of CCTV footage. The weather condition would disrupt this setup.
The trial, which has drawn significant public attention, is expected to resume on Monday when conditions are anticipated to improve.
The case dates back to early April when the country was shaken by reports of the killing of four young children at the Ggaba-based daycare centre. The incident sparked widespread outrage and grief among residents, with calls for swift investigations and justice for the victims.
Christopher Okello Onyum was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder.
Prosecutors allege that he intentionally caused the deaths of the children in a crime that shocked the nation due to its brutality and the vulnerability of the victims.
In response to the public interest surrounding the case, authorities opted to hold proceedings at the Ggaba Community Church grounds to allow greater public access and transparency.
The open trial setting has since attracted large crowds of residents, journalists, and security personnel following each stage of the proceedings.
On Wednesday, a journalist was hit by a prisons van that was transporting Okello to the Ggaba Community Church grounds where the public court is sitting.
Earlier today, police surgeon spoke about Okello’s mental history and hallucinations, as reported Here.
