There was immense relief in Rwanda for supporters of President Paul Kagame and his ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) after the presidency shared photos of the head of state in a meeting amidst sickness rumors.
There were reports that President Paul Kagame was “seriously sick.” Aged 67, Kagame has in the past few days been a subject of discussed over reports regarding his health condition.
Now the presidency has released photos of Kagame, who won another five-year term in 2024, as part of the routine updates on presidential activities.
Kagame has ruled Rwanda, a small East African nation since its 1994 genoc!de. He was first. the de facto leader, and later the president.
Results from elections like the one of 2024 which he won with 99.18 per cent of the total votes casts, show how popular Kagame is with with the Rwandan population.
But rights activists insist such sweeping victory shows how democracy remains elusive in Rwanda.
Now, the photos, shared nearly three weeks since the previous posting, are being interpreted by some as the presidency’s response to the rumors of reports of Kagame’s sickness reports.
Kagame met former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, a facilitator of the Luanda-Nairobi peace process for eastern DR Congo, at Urugwiro Village.
The presidency reported that the meeting between Kagame and Obasanjo happened at Urugwiro Village in the afternoon of Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
“They [Kagame and Obasanjo] discussed the situation in the region, along with various key issues of continental and global significance,” it noted.
“The two leaders shared insights on pathways toward stability, cooperation, and progress.”
The Rwandan army has also spoken out on President Paul Kagame’s sickness rumors, as reported Here.
As The Pearl Times has previously reported, President Paul Kagame’s sons are in the Rwandan army, with out graduating from Sandhurst months ago. (See Details Here and There).
