Paul Kagame Sickness Reports: Rwandan Army Breaks Silence

The Rwandan army, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), and the Ministry of Defence has spoken out on President Paul Kagame sickness reports hours after claims that the long serving leader was seriously sick.

A statement attributed to the RDF which circulated on social media on the health President Paul Kagame claimed that the head of state was “currently facing a serious health crisis.”

In the same statement dated June 23, 2025, the authors purported to confirm that “recent reports regarding his [Paul Kagame’s] condition are accurate.”

The authors of the now impugned statement had also claimed the president’s situation was now “very unstable at this time, and he remains under intensive medical care by a specialized team.”

They also urged Rwandans and friends of Rwanda to “stay united and to lift our head of state in their prayers during this critical period.”

The authors of the statement attributed to the RDF also encouraged the population to “remain calm,” and that the Republic’s institutions “remain functional.”

The authors also said the “RDF stands fully committed to safeguarding peace, order and national stability.”

Now, the official RDF channel has dismissed the statement as “fake news” and not issued by the Rwanda Defence Forces.

In recent years, fake news reports have been been amplified by the ease with which people can manipulate text, images and videos.

Last week, a so-called leaked video of Western Uganda youth MP aspirant Elizabeth Kakwanzi Katanywa made rounds on social media, with some claiming she had released it to gain popularity, as reported Here, There and Over There.
