Uganda Police Force (UPF) has spoken out on the arrest of human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo of Chapter Four Uganda, explaining reasons for his detention.
Security Operatives picked Opiyo from Kamwokya in Kampala on December 22.
Hours after Opiyo’s arrest, police has confirmed detaining the human rights defender at Kireka.
According to a statement from police, Opiyo was arrested by a joint security taskforce.
The Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) was also part of the operation.
Opiyo faces money laundering charges.
“We would like to confirm the arrest of Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo, by a Joint Task team of Security and Financial Intelligence, on allegations of money laundering and related malicious acts,” a statement from police read in part.
“The investigations are progressing well and any new developments will be communicated in due course. He remains in our custody at the Special Investigations Division.”
