Former army commander and Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) leader Maj Gen Gregg Mugisha Muntu has sent a clear warning to President Yoweri Museveni on the conduct of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Gen Muhoozi is Museveni’s son and senior presidential advisor on special operations, most of which are security and defence related.
This week, Muhoozi made local and international headlines when he made posts about the arrest and detention of Edward Ssebuufu, popularly known as Eddie Mutwe, a bodyguard to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
Gen Muhoozi said he was holding Eddie Mutwe in his basement and that Bobi Wine’s bodyguard was learning Runyankore.
The Chief of Defence Forces even asked Bobi Wine “what will you do about?”
The statements made some Ugandans accuse Gen Muhoozi of tribalism. University professor Jimmy Spire Ssentongo said the anger against Banyankore was unfortunate and offered proposals on the way out (Read his opinion Here).
Retired Major General Muntu, a man who served in the bush war that brought the ruling National Resistance Army/Movement (NRM/A) to power and served as an army commander before falling out with Museveni, has sent a warning to the president.
Muntu, who also challenged Museveni in the 2021 elections through his Alliance for National Transformation party, said Museveni has the powers to rein in the Chief of Defence Forces before it is too late.
He urged the president to learn from the mistakes of past armies like the Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA).
“To the CIC [Commander in Chief of armed forces] Gen YK Museveni. May I implore you to be guided by your own teachings over time about the recklessness of the past armies (UA, UNLA), the consequences of their actions and impunity,” noted Muntu.
“You are the CIC. The buck stops at your doorstep. Act. It is never too late.”
He added: “I am not asking him to rein in his son. I am asking him as the CIC to exercise his responsibility in regard to the conduct of a CDF.”
Gen Muntu and other generals have previously expressed their unhappiness with Muhoozi’s conduct to the extent of saying they will never salute Museveni’s son if he ever becomes president. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
Meanwhile, MP Ssemujju Nganda says he has already written his will after threats from Muhoozi. He also says he believes Muhoozi has ‘overthrown’ his 80-year-old father and he has predicted hell for Uganda in coming months. (See Details Here).
