The so-called Elizabeth Kakwanzi Katanywa leaked video has thrust the youthful politician and the western youth MP race for 2026 into more limelight.
Kakwanzi is just one of the scores interested in the western youth MP position. Thanks to the so-called leaked video — which her camp has dismissed as not being of hers — Elizabeth Kakwanzi Katanywa is now the most famous aspirant for the position.
But as The Pearl Times has observed, Elizabeth Kakwanzi Katanywaseemed to have been on the ground trying to do all she can to ensure that she becomes the next western youth MP for the period running from 2026 to 2031.
Former Secretary for External Relations at the National Youth Council of Uganda from 2016 to 2021 Edson Rugumayo is the current Western Youth MP (2021-2026) and is ineligible for another term.
So, apart from Elizabeth Kakwanzi Katanywa, who else is in the race for Western Youth MP 2026-2031? The race is already crowded, with previous reports putting the number of those interested at about 30.
But as the country inches closer to the 2026 elections, some keep pulling out as the front runners form alliances.
Most of the candidates are seeking the support and flag of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) led by long serving president Yoweri Museveni.
Most of the current youth MPs belong to or are affiliated to the ruling NRM.
Here are some of the Western Youth MP election candidates:
Elizabeth Kakwanzi Katanywa

Kakwanzi seeks to empower the youth through initiatives in entrepreneurship, agriculture and technology.
“Empowering youth through agriculture is a vital strategy to address the issue of job scarcity. By engaging young people in farming and agricultural initiatives, we can provide them with meaningful employment opportunities while fostering essential skills in entrepreneurship, technology, and environmental management. This approach not only helps to create jobs but also promotes sustainable practices and enhances food security,” she has previously explained.
“By investing in agricultural education and resources, we can inspire a new generation of innovative leaders who can drive economic growth and contribute to their communities.”
Julian Amanya

In a recent interview, Amanya, who holds a 2022 bachelor of arts and social sciences degree from Kyambogo University, waxed lyrical about her credentials and fitness to become the next youth MP for western Uganda.
“I’m driven by the need to bridge gaps in youth representation and policy-making processes. I believe my conviction and strong desire to address these issues make me a suitable candidate for this position,” she said.
“Growing up in a war-torn region taught me survival skills and resilience, which have prepared me to compete with others in the country. I want to prove that young people can make a difference in societal development when given the right platform. I’m eager to take on this challenge and contribute to shaping the narratives of our community.”
Other candidates include:
Dr. Taali King Mukasa

Daisy Arinda Kankiriho

Joram Mpairwe Ampuriire
