President Yoweri Museveni says he has cancelled a cabinet meeting scheduled for Monday, May 05, 2025 at State House Entebbe.
Museveni’s ministers usually meet every Monday to discuss policies and other issues of national importance. But this week, Museveni says, he has decided that there should be no such cabinet meeting.
The president has also successfully convinced Speaker of Parliament Anita Among to give MPs a break on Tuesday, May 06, 2025. Parliament usually convenes for plenary sittings from Tuesday through Thursday.
So, why did Museveni cancel Monday’s cabinet meeting and ask Speaker Anita Among to call off Tuesday’s sitting?
Museveni wants MPs and ministers to take part in the local council elections for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
The president, who is also the NRM national chairman, said he was “ alerting and requesting all the NRM members to go to the village centres in their respective local areas by 10am on Tuesday the 6th of May, 2025 to do two things.”
The first thing would be for them to “take part in the baraza that will verify the members of the NRM that have been registered in the NRM registers” and the second will be to “take part in the elections of the NRM LCI flag-bearer for LCI chairmanship and also elect the village NRM structures.”
Museveni insisted that “the two activities – register verification and electing LCI NRM flag-bearers and the NRM structures – should strictly take place between 10am and 2pm” according to the guidelines issued by the NRM Electoral commission.
“To ensure that the leaders participate, there will be no cabinet meeting on Monday, the 5th of May, 2025 and I have also agreed with the Rt. Hon. Speaker that there will be no Parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, the 6th of May, 2025,” he added.
The president and NRM national chairman further noted that he will be in Rwakitura village in Kiruhura District while the first lady and education minister Janet Museveni will go to Irenga in Ntungamo to participate in the verification of their respective NRM, village registers.
So, will Museveni line behind his village’s candidate? “I will, however, not line behind any candidate for election because as chairman of the NRM, I welcome any choice of our members. I cannot and should not, therefore, take sides,” he explained.
