At least two months before he was shot dead in the capital Nairobi in the evening of April 30, 2025, Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were had revealed that some unknown people planned to kill him. The claims by the Kenyan MP assassinated on Wednesday are recorded in videos and in speeches at public events.
Two gunmen riding on a motorbike shot MP Charles Ong’ondo Were at about 7:30pm near City Mortuary in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
The lives of Were’s driver and bodyguard, with whom he was in the same Toyota Saloon car, were spared by the assailants.
Charles Ong’ondo Were was a second term MP from the Orange Democratic Party (ODM). His current term, to which he was elected in 2022, was supposed to end in 2027.
In the months leading to his assassination, Were had claimed that some people were trailing him and that he believed his life was in danger.
In February 2025, he complained that groups from areas outside Kasipul Constituency were orchestrating incidents of violence in his area.
Were addressed reporters at Oyugis Police Station, telling them he had to look for ways of leaving a funeral in God Nyango after some people blocked the road.
At another funeral, in Nyatindo, Were further claimed, there were plans to block him from speaking, which led to chaos.
“Immediately I arrived, before even praying, one of the notorious criminals… stated that I would not talk there,” Charles Ong’ondo Were said a few months ago at that press conference.
“The villagers were angered. What happened in the process is with investigative agencies.”
There is also a video circulating on social media in which Charles Ong’ondo Were talks about people planning to attack him.
“Those brewing trouble in Kasipul are not from here. Maybe they are from Migori or Kisumu. At a meeting yesterday, there was a former MCA here and someone called Ongaki,” he is heard saying in the undated video.
“[The former MCA] said they are waiting for a public gathering where I’ll be in attendance so that they bring plainclothes police officers not from Kasipul together with youth from Kisumu to create chaos so that I am shot dead.”
There is another video said to have been recorded two weeks before his death he said his constituency would not be the same again if he is assassinated.
“When you hear I have been killed, Kasipul will not be the same again… The people who are messing with us here are serial thieves, and we know them,” he said.
“I know they won’t kill me because I have the Bible in my phone and another one under my pillow.”
He also said there was a plan to cause chaos at a funeral so the goons hired from Kisumu could shoot him.
“A meeting was held last night at 8 p.m. somewhere with an MCA and some people, and the plan is to bring people from Kisumu to cause a fracas at a funeral so they can shoot me,” he is quoted as saying at a public event.
