A Kenyan MP was shot dead in the capital Nairobi in the evening of April 30, 2025. The shooting of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were happened at around 7:30pm near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi.
The stretch of Nairobi’s Ngong Road near which the shooting happened is under the surveillance of CCTV cameras.
Two assailants riding a motorcycle shot Charles Ong’ondo Were dead, according to eyewitness reports.
Kenyan media quoted eyewitnesses as saying that one of the gunmen had got off the motorbike and opened fire at Charles Ong’ondo Were at close range.
The assailants aimed at MP Charles Ong’ondo Were. His driver survived the attack.
It is also said that there were traffic officers near the scene of the shooting of Charles Ong’ondo Were. These officers reportedly witnessed the shooting, like other eye witnesses, as it happened.
The MP Were was pronounced dead at the Nairobi Hospital.
“It is with profound shock and unspeakable sorrow that I have this evening received the devastating news of the fatal shooting of Hon. Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul Constituency, in an incident that occurred along Ngong Road near City Mortuary, Nairobi,” wrote National Assembly speaker Moses Wetangula.
It is said that MP Charles Ong’ondo Were had been in the parliamentary chambers hours earlier. A few months ago, Charles Ong’ondo Were is said to have said that his life was in danger and that he was being trailed.
