Up to 13 clan members were killed in a road accident as they returned from an introduction ceremony. The accident happened in Chekwatit Village of Kaserem Sub-County along the Kapchorwa-Mbale Road on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
This group of relatives and friends was travelling from Kapchorwa to Busia District after attending an introduction ceremony. The deceased were traveling in a Toyota Hiace.
Most of them were members of Abakwala Clan from Magombe Village in Busia District.
Preliminary reports say the vehicle overturned a number of times after its driver lost control of it.
Most of the people died on spot at about 9pm when the accident happened. The rest sustained serious life-threatening injuries and were pronounced dead at the Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
The injured had first been rushed to Kapchorwa Hospital but were later referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
Sipi Regional Police spokesperson Fredmark Chesang said the Toyota Hiace was overloaded with passengers. Chesang also suspected overspeeding and brake failure as being some of the causes of the accident.
The accident follows another fatal accident in which nine people were killed on May 07, 2025 in Kapchorwa.
It also happened a few weeks after a YY bus caught fire, killing several people, and another one in which Rajiv Ruparelia was killed after his car burst into flames. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
