Daniel Kisekka, a UPDF deserter, has pleaded guilty to participating in the murder in 2015 of prosecutor Joan Kagezi. Kagezi, who was a key prosecutor in terrorism cases, was shot dead in Kiwatule.
“This evening, Monday 30th March 2015, Ms. Joan Kagezi, Ag. Assistant Director of Public Prosecution, was shot dead at 7:15 pm, near her residence in Kiwatule a city suburb as she drove home with her children,” a police statement on Kagezi’s murder read in part, then.
“She had stopped at a fruit stall by the road side where she normally stopped to purchase fruits, when the criminals riding on a motorcycle of boxer type, red in color, stopped next to the parked vehicle and shot her twice in the neck and shoulder, through the widow on the driver’s side. She was driving the vehicle herself.”
The trial of suspects in the assassination has dragged on for a decade now.
Kisekka, one of the four suspects in the murder, has today, May 19, 2025, pleaded guilty to participating in the murder, as he appeared before the International Crimes Division of the High Court in the capital Kampala.
Prosecution asked court to sentence Daniel Kisekka to 35 years imprisonment to send a message to other criminals, and to atone for the murder of Kagezi, then a senior principal state attorney, who was involved in prosecuting organized crime and terrorism cases.
A panel of four judges led by Justice Michael Elubu handed Kisekka a 35-year-sentence in a plea bargaining deal.
KISEKKA’S CONFESSION
Daniel Kisekka did not pull the trigger that ended Joan Kagezi’s life on March 30, 2015. Gang leader John Kibuuka is said to have been the one who shot Kagezi dead.
Kisekka was was part of the John Kibuuka-led group that planned and implemented the plot to kill Kagezi.
His role was to coordinate the group, secure guns to execute the plan and to trail Kagezi on the planned day of the assassination.
Being a UPDF deserter, Kisekka was also given the role of finding the weapons. Previously working with the UPDF in Gulu, Kisekka was accused of deserting the army with two AK47 guns.
It is said that the group was hired for $20,000, but Kisekka said he was only paid Shs500,000 cash.
After deserting the army, Kisekka lived with Kibuuka and two others — Nasur Abdallah Mugonole and John Masajjage.
They reportedly used the AK47s Kisekka deserted the army with to engage in armed robbery.
It is also said that Kibuuka was the one who clean the guns and even took Kisekka and others to a witchdoctor for cleansing after assassinating Kagezi.
Kisekka has 14 days within which to appeal his conviction and sentence.
It should be remembered that months after President Museveni said he knew Joan Kagezi’s killers were and where they were hiding, the photos of suspects were made public. (See Details Here and There).
