A private security guard has been killed in a bank robbery, police and financial institution have confirmed.
The guard attached to GKO Security Company, a licensed private security guard in Uganda, had attempted to rob the Wakiso branch of Diamond Trust Bank (DTB)
Kampala Metropolitan Police identified the deceased private security guard as Emmanuel Okao.
Okao’s suspected accomplice Justine Okello, aged 27, surrendered to police. Okello’s life was spared and is now under detention.
Two guns were recovered from the scene.
DTB Uganda has saluted security officers for their support and hailed “the quick activation of our security protocols” for “successfully” foiling an attempted robbery at the DTB Wakiso branch in the morning of April 27.
“One suspect is currently in police custody, while another, regrettably, lost his life during the operation. We are closely collaborating with the Uganda Police and other security agencies to ensure a full and transparent investigation,” DTB Uganda said in a statement on the incident.
“We are deeply grateful for the swift and professional actions of the security forces, which helped protect our premises, and want to reassure our customers, staff, and partners that all bank property remains safe and secure.”
