Police has arrested up to 29 people in relation to the murder of a police officer by a mob in Ibanda District.
According to Uganda Police Force (UPF), on April 6, 2025, No. 75290 PC Suleiman Chemonges, attached to Bisheshe Police Station in Ibanda District, was killed by a mob in Ibanda.
PC Chemonges had been deployed to provide security at the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus in Kambogo Cell, Bisheshe Division, Ibanda District.
“Kahangire, who had been accused of attempted murder, died while on remand at Nyabuhikye Government Prison. He had been arrested by police after evading capture for his alleged crime,” police said in a statement.
“At around 2:00 PM, PC Chemonges was attacked by a mob at the funeral grounds. The mob accused him of involvement in Kahangire’s arrest and subsequent detention in prison. Despite firing warning shots to protect himself, the mob overwhelmed and killed him.”
Both regional and national police publicists have confirmed the arrest and identities of 29 suspects.
“We have since arrested 29 suspects connected to the murder and continuing with the search for additional perpetrators,” said UPF spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke.
“The Uganda Police Force condemns this violent act and assures the public that all those involved in this criminal act will be held accountable.”
They are: Gerald Nayebare, Andrew Kandwanaho, Francis Tukamuhebwa, Seiz Asiimwe, Brian Nsimire, Jackson Tumusiime, Nicholas Monday, Saturday Arinaitwe, Gilbert Abaho, Wilbroad Twesigye, Christine Atuhaire, and Alex Ahimbisibwe.
Other suspects are; Laban Nuwagira, Micheal Tumwine, Alexander Nimikyiriza, Allen Niwatuha, David Nuwabiine, Crescent Mukama, Infinitius Kagumire, Alex Tumwebaze, Christine Komugisa, Among Kamwesigye, Gastone Muhwezi, Ambrose Tushemerirwe, Christopher Ainomugisha, Band Vincent Mbabazi, Maberi Alfred Arinaitwe, Sam Kyikuringwa, Bironi Katungye.
