Ugandans across the political divide have received the news of Kampala Capital City Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura Omutatiina’s announcement that she will stand against first son and senior presidential advisor on special operations Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. 

Doreen Nyanjura has announced she will run for president in the 2026 if President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba successfully registers as a presidential candidate. 

Museveni’s son said the job of Commander Land Forces had taken up too much of his time, making it mostly difficult for him to interact with them.

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine has not relented in his efforts to shake Ugandan president Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s tables ever since the head of state and government elevated his son of 48 years to the rank of general, the top-most in the Ugandan army, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). 

This week was significant for the alleged father-to-son succession plot in Uganda’s politics after President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni announced a few changes in the UPDF, rotating around his only male child Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who was until days ago the Commander of Land Forces of the national army, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces. 

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has told Ugandans to wake up and resist an alleged plot by Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, Uganda’s President, to crown his son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as the country’s next head of state and government.

Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, the Ugandan president, has acknowledged that his son has made mistakes. But the 78-year-old long serving president defended his decision to promote his son from the rank of lieutenant general to a full general, top most rank in the national army, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). 

Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao is considered the ‘midwife’ of Uganda’s transitional politics from Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni to a new Uganda. But the year by which he thinks Gen Museveni will peacefully hand over power is quite different from the one revealed by first son and senior presidential advisor on special operations Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. 

First son and senior presidential advisor on special operations Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced celebrations after his father and Ugandan president Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni promoted him from the rank of Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) to General (Gen), the highest in the Ugandan national army, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
