Ugandan first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has made a major declaration on running for presidency, the country’s highest office, in the 2026 presidential election, setting the pace for the 2026 presidential contest that could see his father Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni retire after about four decades at the helm of the impoverished East African nation. 

Democratic Party (DP) President General Norbert Mao, who also doubles as the Ugandan Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, might soon be accused of flip-flopping and of ‘speaking in tongues’ on issues related to his cooperation agreement with ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairman and the country’s President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni. 

State House Uganda has cleared air on reports that the country’s elderly and longest-serving post-independence ruler Gen President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni is soon planning to resign his job to allow for a new leader to succeed him in what could be the first peaceful political transition in the 60 years of Uganda’s independence. 

Uganda’s 2026 presidential race is clearly taking shape, with first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba likely to wait for nearly 10 years before he can run for the top office in the land and, probably, successfully succeed his father Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni. 

Ugandan first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has sworn that nobody, not even his much-feared father Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, will ban him from accessing his Twitter account and from tweeting as freely as he wishes – even when some his tweets have been labelled controversial, careless and known to whip up social media storms.

Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) leader Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu has warned Ugandan President, his former boss Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, and his son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba against messing up with the country’s security and the national army. 

Norbert Mao, the Democratic Party (DP) president general and the Ugandan Minister in charge of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, has fired back at haters, including some leaders of the political opposition, after President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni told a local television station that he had not discussed the issue of transition with him. 

Ugandan President and ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairman Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa has dismissed claims by opposition Democratic Party (DP) president general that their cooperation agreement between the two parties and principals includes working out Uganda’s first peaceful transition since independence. 

Uganda’s President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has spoken out on his son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s rumored 2026 presidential bid, describing him as ‘a good general’ whom voters will make a choice on.
