Up to 24 retiring UPDF generals will get juicy packages when they retire from the national army in coming months.
The 24 generals are part of the batch of 531 expected to leave the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) after President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, the commander-in-chief of armed forces, approved their retirement.
They are led Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, the man who has served, separately, as chief for UPDF and Uganda Police Force (UPF). He is now the minister of works and transport.
Other notable officers expected to leave the army soon are former deputy inspector of police Maj Gen Jackson Katsigazi Tumusiime, and former chief of military intelligence (CMI) boss Maj Gen Abel Kandiho.

Retiring UPDF officers are entitled to attractive retirement packages. The retirement packages for this batch of 24 generals is as significant as that received by a previous batch of retiring generals that included former deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Peter Elwelu.
