Gen Katumba Wamala and Gen YK Museveni
KAMPALA — The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has commenced the retirement process for a group of senior military officers, marking the end of distinguished careers that have shaped the country’s military leadership for decades.
The retirement exercise, being conducted under UPDF Retirement Batch 16, recently saw senior officers undergo documentation at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters in Mbuya.
According to the UPDF, the exercise involves 20 General Officers comprising one General, two Lieutenant Generals, four Major Generals and 13 Brigadier Generals.
During the exercise, Maj Gen James Kinalwa, representing the Chief of Joint Staff, praised the retiring officers for their service to the nation and encouraged them to remain active contributors to Uganda’s development even after leaving active military service.
The retirement process is part of the UPDF’s broader personnel transition programme aimed at ensuring continuity, professional growth and leadership renewal within the armed forces. Thousands of military personnel are expected to retire under the wider exercise.
While the UPDF has officially confirmed the retirement exercise, it has not publicly released a comprehensive list of the officers involved. However, media reports have linked several senior commanders and former military leaders to the retirement process.
Among the most prominent names linked to the retirement exercise is Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, a former Chief of Defence Forces who has been serving as Minister of Works and Transport but has now been appointed public service minister. (See related reporting Here).
Other notable officers reportedly involved include former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Charles Angina, Reserve Force Commander Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany, and former Chieftain of Military Intelligence Maj Gen Abel Kandiho.
