Besigye: I Don’t Blame Muhoozi – It’s Ugandans’ Fault

Besigye Will Not Be Released Even After Supreme Court Ruling -- Muhoozi Military Assistant Besigye Will Be Hanged in Gulu on Heroes Day – Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba Besigye: I Don’t Blame Muhoozi - It’s Ugandans’ Fault LEAVE ME ALONE! Besigye Trashes Muhoozi Tweet Praising Him

Besigye and Muhoozi Kainerugaba

Veteran opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye has reacted on recent conduct of first son and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, saying it is not his fault but rather that of Ugandans.

Gen Muhoozi is known for expressing his mind on microblogging site X, formerly Twitter. Some of his views make some people excited while others, especially his critics, curse and wonder if he would not stay in office were President Yoweri Museveni not his father.

But even Museveni himself has previously appeared to get tired of his son’s tweets. For example, once, when Muhoozi threatened to invade Kenya, Museveni fired him from his position as Commander of Land Forces.

Museveni also apologized on behalf of Muhoozi, and also explained why he had in an interesting turn promoted his son to the rank of a full general despite his mistakes. (See Details Here, There and Over There).

On October 04, 2024, Gen Muhoozi made a post that has escalated diplomatic tensions between Uganda and the US. Muhoozi accused US Ambassador to Uganda William Popp of disrespecting his father Gen Museveni and of undermining the constitution. (See reporting Here).

Now, Dr Besigye says Gen Muhoozi is not to blame but rather Ugandans who have allowed Museveni to lord it over Uganda the way he has for nearly four decades.

“Power is supposed to belong to the people and ideally represented in the parliament. In Uganda, power has never belonged to the people. From 1966, power has been vested in gun and gunmen,” Besigye told Next Big Talk.

“I can’t fault Gen. Muhoozi for what he is doing. I fault the people of Uganda who have allowed a situation of 40 years to develop and mature to this state. We are the problem.”

Besigye then argued that Muhoozi was a true disciple of his father Gen Museveni and that just like his father, Muhoozi wants some kind of absolute power where he is not questioned.

“Gen Muhoozi has a worldview shaped entirely by the power of his father which is unchallenged and unrestrained power,” Besigye further opined.

“That is what he represents. That is how he sees things and his response to situations. When he says all that, he thinks he is speaking on behalf of Ugandans.”

Muhoozi has given Ambassador William Popp up to Monday to apologize or leave Uganda. It was not only the US envoy in Muhoozi’s line of fire. He also accused Kenyans who don’t like him as useless – after he claimed God had told him not to invade Kenya. (Read Stories Here, There and Over There).

Besigye has previously claimed that Muhoozi was illegally recruited into the army. Both Muhoozi and Besigye have also bitterly exchanged over the reminder that Muhoozi was first a refugee as well as after Besigye linked the first son’s wife to a controversial deal. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
