Apostle Grace Lubega of Phaneroo Ministries in Uganda is on the spot after he linked Baganda names Ndawula and Nandawula to spirits of sudden disease and death.
Preaching about the right naming and giving an example of Jacob whose name meant supplanter in Genesis 27:36, Apostle Grace Lubega told his congregation that he did not know many people named Ndawula or Nandawula in their old age.
“In Buganda we have names like Ndawula, Nandawula. Those are names of spirits of sudden disease and death. People with those names, they fall sick for two, three, four days and they die,” he preached.
“That’s why there are very few of them with such names that live long. It’s hard to find a 90-year-old Ndawula – not impossible but very hard. And all of them die sudden deaths because every time they say Ndawula, something wakes up and says ‘I have a responsibility.”
But his preaching has been greeted with criticism from Ugandans, some of whom have been known to frown upon Pentecostals and evangelicals in the country.
“According to Phaneroo pastor, we should change our Traditional surnames and get the exotic names because our traditional surnames are for our Ancestors……I now see why most Phaneroo goers are struggling in life. Keep changing your surnames ba dear!!!!” commented a one @AllanSseky on microblogging site X.
“And with a straight face, he lies. Which Bible scripture is he quoting to back his rumbling balderdash? These grifters just come up with stuff that has no foundation in truth and disseminates them to their already manipulated, desperate followers,” wrote former NBS journalist @MordecaiMuriisa.
“How do people give time such rubbish, our immediate neighbour Ndawula died at 80, many people in their family are name Ndawula, Nandawula n are getting old,” wrote yet another @ivan_senyange
“Dear Apostle Grace Lubega, your ignorance should have boundaries. The name Grace is originally a latin name for the three charities to the three goddesses of Charm, beauty and creativity. Christianity adopted it from Latin. Why werent your ancestors called grace before colonisers?” submitted a one @KalakiBrian.
Some of the followers of Apostle Grace Lubega are also doing all they can to defend his sermon, with most of them telling critics to dig out and the entire sermon and listen to it instead of running with a clip on Ndawula and Nandawula.
Ugandan pastors have in recent years been on the spot over controversial or incredible statements or actions. Prophet Elvis Mbonye has, for example, claimed meeting Jesus at the expressway and chilling with him while Pastor Manjeri has alleged going to heaven and meeting God and His son Jesus for two hours.
