Main opposition National Unity Platform has released the final lists of NUP flagbearers for Western Uganda for the 2026 local council elections.
The lists indicate how the NUP is attempting to penetrate into western Uganda, where President Yoweri Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is strong.
The National Unity Platform is looking forward to shedding off references made to its being a Buganda-only party.
All NUP MPs – except John Baptist Nambeshe – hail from Buganda, where party leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine hails from.
The NUP is now strategizing to win some seats in Parliament and local councils across the country – even if concerns on how free and fair the elections remain.
Some local council positions in western Uganda had attracted one candidate and therefore not competitive while for some positions, no candidates expressed interest in becoming NUP flagbearers.
“Where we had more than one candidate running for the same position in Western Uganda, these were the successful candidates for local government,” the National Unity Platform noted.
