Winnie Byanyima Speaks Out on Reports of Begging DPP Abodo Help in Husband Besigye’s ‘Complicated Case’

Byanyima Explains Photo with DPP Abodo

Winnie Byanyima, the UNAIDS Executive Director and wife to remanded opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye, has spoken out on claims that she has begged Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo to help her husband.

Kizza Besigye was last week sent on remand after being abducted from Nairobi, Kenya with a one Obeid Kamulegeya. Winnie Byanyima has checked on her husband in prison. She has also accused President Yoweri Museveni of prosecuting Besigye and their family for over up to 25 years.

Besigye returns to the Court Martial in Makindye in December 2024 when the military court will be expected to start the trial of the former Museveni personal doctor and fellow National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war fighter.

Former Kenyan minister and now opposition politician Martha Karua is expected to head Besigye’s legal team that will comprise of about 50 lawyers, including Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago. Karua has applied to the Uganda Law Council for a temporary permit to practice in Uganda.

It should be remembered that Besigye had gone to attend Martha Karua’s book launch when he was abducted and driven back to Uganda.

A sensationalist account on microblogging site X, formerly Twitter, has claimed that Winnie Byanyima had met with DPP Abodo to try and seek her help on the gravity of the charges against her husband Besigye.

“Desperate UNAIDs boss Byanyima seeks DPP Abodo assistance in complicated Besigye case,” the mostly propagandist account wrote.

In response, Winnie Byanyima made it clear it was not true that she had asked DPP Abodo to help her with her husband’s case. She also explained the photo that the account had used to back its outlandish claim.

“Fake news, shame on you! This pic was taken last year when I bumped into the DPP at Entebbe Airport VIP lounge,” she wrote.
