The General Court Martial in Makindye in the capital Kampala has remanded opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye and his co-accused ‘comrade’ Hajj Lutale Kamulegeya to Luzira Prison.
Besigye and Kamulegeya are accused of unlawful possession of two pistols and ammunition, which the military court claimed they were found with in Nairobi, Kenya on November 16.
They also face charges of holding meetings abroad to solicit funds with the alleged plan of disrupting national security.
Besigye and Kamulegeya denied the charges.
Besigye’s lawyer Erias Lukwago told the General Court Martial in Makindye that it did not have the jurisdiction to handle the matter.
Besigye’s ally and Kampala deputy lord mayor Doreen Nyanjura emphasized the military court’s lack of jurisdiction in a post.
“According to the Kangaroo court martial, Dr Kizza Besigye together with Hajji Obed Kamulegeya were found with a pistol in Nairobi. KB is also accused of holding meetings in Greece and Geneva with an aim of soliciting logistical support to compromise the UPDF security,” wrote Nyanjura.
“Clearly the Makindye court martial doesn’t not have jurisdiction to handle cases “committed” outside Uganda!”
Dr Kizza Besigye will be on remand in Luzira Prison until December 02, 2024.
