UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima has broken the silence on her past relationship with President Yoweri Museveni.
Byanyima, wife to opposition politician Col (Rtd) Dr Kizza Besigye, was responding to a comment by veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda on a popular night show this week.
Mwenda made an allusion to the Museveni-Byanyima relationship as he debated Besigye’s case.
But Byanyima, daughter to former Democratic Party (DP) stalwart Boniface Byanyima, called out Mwenda for trivializing her husband Besigye’s incarceration over a past relationship with Museveni.
On a Saturday morning show, the UNAIDS Executive Director spoke on the particular relationship with Museveni.
Noting that she had seen the son of Amos Kaguta frequenting their home from the time she was as young as three years old, Byanyima described her relationship with a then youthful Museveni as “normal.”
She added that the relationship had developed challenges, prompting its end.
“It was a normal relationship with President Museveni. It had some challenges, and I left it, but it is not relevant to the political discussion,” she told Next Big Talk.

In recent months, Byanyima, has had to defend herself against several allegations, especially since her husband was kidnapped from Kenya. For example, she had to speak against allegations that Museveni had helped her find a UN job, and explain her meeting with him in Switzerland. (See Details Here and There).
