A video of Gen Moses Ali, Uganda’s elderly Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament, asking his voters to elect him for another five-year term as their MP has shocked Ugandans.
Mosese Ali is aged 86. He is the MP representing Adjumani West in the 11th Parliament and wants to be part of the 12th Parliament next year.
When Uganda goes to the polls – presidential, parliamentary, local government and special interest groups – in 2026, Moses Ali will be 87 years.
Politicians are already in their constituencies trying to woo voters to elect them in their respective political parties’ flag bearers ahead of the general elections due next year.
Even Moses Ali has been in his constituency trying to convince voters that he is the best candidate to keep securing their future.
Gen Moses Ali also sought to assure his voters that he still has the stamina to keep representing them in parliament.
If his Adjumani West voters see him worthy of another term as MP, Gen Moses Ali will be 92 years old by the time he completes that term of five years in 2031.
Yet Moses Ali is not only old but he is frail. In public, he is seen shaking in his chair and he struggles to keep standing.
But old as he is, Moses Ali seems to be popular among voters – at least if results of the 2021 election are anything to go by.
As The Pearl Times has previously reported, Moses Ali was the flag bearer for ruling National Resistance Movement.
He got 10,227 votes, beating Patrick Tandrupasi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) who garnered 6,891 votes, independent candidates Santos Gabriel Adrawa who garnered 1,836 votes, Dominic Asusi Andama with 1,145 votes, Philip Irama Tolu with 934 votes, Henry Ajirika Drasiku who got 603 votes and Gasper Draga with 202 votes.
Yet even if he seems popular (again, according to results of the 2021 election – a lot might have changed the Adjumani West political terrain since then), Ugandans online are reacting to the video of him asking his voters to re-elect him, telling him to think of retiring from elective politics given his advanced age and health condition.
The vide of Moses Ali asking his voters for another term is Here.
Previously, Gen Moses Ali collapsed in Parliament, appeared weak, frail and struggling with a strange disease. Ugandans have also demanded answers on Gen Moses Ali’s health condition and have been telling President Museveni to fire the old man and let him retire. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
