A city lawyer has been arrested over his alleged involvement in theft from Prof George Kanyeihamba, a former supreme court judge and ex-minister. Andrew Obam of Loi Advocates has also been arraigned in court and charged.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) of the Uganda Police Force (UPF), teamed up with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to arrest and institute charges against Obam.
Obam, an advocate of the High Court, was arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of money laundering.
SH-ACU, CID and ODPP alleged that between October 2022 and September 2024, the accused, Andrew Obam, conspired with David Kaliisa, a driver of Prof George Kanyeihamba to fraudulently steal and transfer a total of over USD 56,500 (a little over Shs200m) using cheques that were stolen from the elderly former judge.
“They transfered the stolen money to the account of Loi advocates where Obam is the sole signatory,” the agencies said.
The Anti-Corruption Court has now remanded Obam until July 14, 2025, when he will enter his plea.
