By the time she arrived in Uganda on Sunday, December 01, 2024, former Kenyan justice minister Martha Karua had confirmed she had accepted Dr Kizza Besigye’s request to become his legal team lead in the case in which he and Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya are accused of undermining national security and of illegal possession of firearms.
As early as last Thursday, November 28, Martha Karua applied for a practicing certificate from the Law Council.
But the Council’s members take their time to make a decision to allow or deny the Narc Kenya leader a temporary practicing certificate – never mind President Yoweri Museveni waxing lyrical about East African integration.
On December 02, Martha Karua went to the Uganda Law Council offices in Kampla to check on the progress of her application for a temporary certificate to enable her lead Besigye’s legal team.
To her shock, she got no helpful update. It was not until she contacted Uganda Law Council Chairperson Justice Irene Mulyagonja whose assurances gave her hope that she would have an answer on if she will be allowed to defend Besigye or not.
As of December 02, the council was yet to sit to determine her application. It is hoped that when Besigye and Lutale return to the Museveni military court on December 10, the council will have made its decision on the application.
If it is in favour of Martha Karua, she will lead the legal team of over 50 lawyers representing Dr Besigye and Lutale, both of whom were abducted in Nairobi, Kenya where they had gone to attend her book launch.
Martha Karua proceeded to the Makindye General Court Martial where she complained of security officers checking her twice, an act she termed as “the harassment we have to endure.”
“We were body-checked at the gate. What would make them subject us to a second body check?” she wondered.
“I wondered why they body-checked us twice yet it is just a short distance from the gate and court entrance.” Inside the military court, Martha Karua sat as other lawyers she was supposed to lead — such as Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Eron Kiiza — tussled it out with the court martial’s prosecution.
