Top Museveni Minister Retires as Kasaija, Muhwezi Ask for One More Term

Finance minister Matia Kasaija and security minister Jim Muhwezi say they are seeking reelection to parliament for the last time.

Kasaija, aged 81, has picked nomination forms to contest in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries for the Buyanja County MP seat.

Kasaija says he does not see anyone with potential to work for the people of Buyanja the way he has been serving them.

He has dared young politicians to join him in the political ring and watch as he beats them in the primaries.

Kasaija said, if reelected, this would be his last term before he can retire to his farm.

Muhwezi, 74, has also picked forms for the Rujumbura County position, saying he intends to complete the work he has started before retiring from active parliamentary politics in 2031.

He says he intends to ensure that all villages in Rujumbura have access to electricity and water by the time he completes his next term – if reelected by the voters.

Muhwezi and Kasaija will contest in the NRM party primaries on July 16.

However, one of their cabinet colleagues, Kapchorwa Municipality MP and Minister of Water and Environment Sam Cheptoris Mangusho has opted out of elective parliamentary politics.

Cheptoris, 75, says he believes he has contributed enough to nation building and that “it’s time for me to relax and have fun with my family.”

It should be remembered that in the 2021 elections, Matia Kasaija’s opponent withdrew in favour of a juicy job from Museveni, only for him to face scandals and resign months ago. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
