Tight Security Ahead of World Tourism Day Celebrations in Kasese

By Joseph Masereka

The Police in Kasese district have beefed up security prior to the celebration to the World Tourism Day, which is expected to be graced by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Friday September 27, 2024.

Addressing the press in Kasese Town on September 25, 2024, the public relations police officer for Rwenzori East SP Nelson Tumusiime said security organs including UPDF have put in place mechanisms to ensure a successful event.

‘’We as police and our sister agencies, the UPDF and Prisons, we have set everything to have a successful world tourism day in Kasese,”  said Tumusime.

SP Tumusiime added that they have deployed police everywhere to ensure that they deal with those who might want to disrupt the event. He has since called on locals to attend the event peacefully.

Meanwhile, food vendors were trained on food hygiene, production and customer care. The training was facilitated by Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute- Jinja.

The training, which was held at Central Division Hall in Kasese Municipality was aimed at equipping participants with knowledge of keeping food safe for human consumption and proper ways of handling customers.

In his presentation to participants, the facilitator, Chef Ronald Ssekito, asked food handlers to always safe guard meals from contamination for safe consumption by human beings.

Chef Ssekito, who also asked food handler to be clean and smart, revealed that saving unhygienic food to customers is unethical and can lead to prosecution.

‘’Now I urge you food handlers to safeguard food from getting contamination for safety of our people. I can sue you if you give me food and I get sick,” he said.

The public relations officer of Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute- Jinja, Daniel Kazungu, said the training was part of activities carried out in the host district during the celebration of World Tourism Day.

Kazungu revealed that most of the food handlers lack hotel skills due to little education. He added that the training was also aimed at promoting professionalism among hoteliers.

Salima Mbambu Nyabaghasa, who operates a hotel along Sky Street in Kasese Town, appreciated Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Jinja for the training, saying it will help her to improve on customer care.

Juvenal Masereka, who operates a chapatti and mobile money stall in Katadoba Cell, called for more training to hoteliers, noting that such training helps business operators to improve on their skills in customer relations.
