Police recruits during training.
Uganda Police Force (UPF) has announced that it is reviewing contracts of special police constables (SPCs). Several officers are expected to lose jobs as police reviews special constables’ contracts.
Police spokesperson Kituma Rusoke has confirmed that police was reviewing the deployment of special police constables (SPCs)
The review was already ongoing countrywide at the moment, added Rusoke.
SPCs are police officers on contract terms, sometime between a year and two years.
Management of police has decided to retain some and to disengage several others.
“We are currently reviewing the deployment of Special Police Constables (SPCs) nationwide. SPCs serve on renewable contracts with the Uganda Police Force,” noted Kituma.
“Those whose services remain necessary will be retained, while contracts will not be renewed for those no longer needed by the UPF.
“A number of them are of good use and their contracts are under review and we shall continue engaging them.”
Rusoke also announced that police chief Abbas Byakagaba has appointed has appointed CP James Kusemererwa as the head of the Land Protection Police Unit, with ACP Musani Sabila serving as his deputy.
Previously overseen by the Criminal Investigations Directorate of the Uganda Police Force, the Land Protection Unit is now under the Directorate of Human Rights and Legal Services.
“This restructuring aims to enhance the unit’s capacity to address the legal, operational, and criminal aspects of land-related conflicts, recognizing that most land disputes involve both civil and criminal elements,” explained Rusoke.
Meanwhile, police is in the process of recruiting 10,000 probationer police constables (PPCs).
As interviews start this week, Rusoke has warned candidates against forgery and impersonation, making it clear those caught engaging in such acts will be prosecuted in courts of law.
Rusoke also warned overqualified candidates – like those with postgraduate qualifications – emphasizing that the current recruitment exercise is for those who have completed senior four only.
