In Uganda, parliamentary elections are behind us. In a few months, elected MPs will take oath and get ready to enjoy a juicy salary and allowances. In this report, we look at how much each Ugandan MP will be earning every month. Figures gleaned by The Pearl Times are what have been included in this report.
Also, the allowances may vary based on distance from the seat of Parliament, while the allowances of directly elected MPs may also differ from those of special interest group representatives.
Ugandan MPs are set to earn a monthly salary and allowance package of approximately UGX 35 million (roughly US$9,700-$10,000) in 2026. This total annual remuneration can exceed UGX 360 million when factoring in various substantial allowances.
The new MPs were elected on January 15, with over 60% of incumbents losing their seats, paving the way for newcomers. This significant turnover is expected to bring fresh perspectives to Parliament.
Uganda’s Parliament currently consists of 529 seats, including directly elected constituency MPs, district woman representatives, and special interest group representatives such as youth, persons with disabilities, workers, elders, and the army.
Regarding monthly pay, MPs earn approximately UGX 35 million, comprising salary and allowances. This is the total monthly package MPs receive, making them among the highest-paid legislators on the continent.
The Fuel or Mileage Allowance ranges from UGX 10.3 million to over UGX 31 million monthly, depending on the distance of the constituency from Kampala, where the Parliament is located. This allowance is meant to cover transportation costs for MPs.
The One-time Car Grant is worth UGX 200 million provided once every five years for vehicle purchase. This grant is part of the benefits package for MPs.
Other Allowances
Net salary is approximately UGX 6.1 million, housing allowance is approximately UGX 6 million, and there are also town running fees. These additional allowances contribute to the overall compensation package.
In many citizens earn less (with only some thousands earning UGX 1 million and above), being an MP is one of the most lucrative jobs, with perks that include hefty monthly allowances, car grants, and medical coverage, making it a highly sought-after position.
