SHARING THE NATIONAL CAKE: Ugandan MPs Increase their Salaries & Allowances, Set to Share Shs193bn Package

Members of Parliament (MPs) have reportedly increased their allowances and salaries as the tough economic situation continues to bite. 

The Parliamentary Commission, whose chairperson is Speaker Anita Annet Among, is said to have debated a proposal to either increase all MPs’ allowances or salaries starting July 2022.

The Commission reportedly discussed how the current skyrocketing commodity prices and high cost of living have affected legislators, some of whom are said to have taken loans to be able to keep doing their legislative work and meeting the demanding of their financially stressed constituents.

Now, according to government-owned newspaper New Vision, MPs have enhanced their allowances and salaries by a whopping Shs193bn, and that they will share this amount of money in the next financial year.

The basic salary of a Ugandan MP is Shs11m every month. In addition to this figure, in addition to where each MP comes from, they earn between Shs10 and Shs30m as mileage allowances every month. Representatives of special interest groups such as youth MPs earn more because they represent larger constituencies.

The 11^th Parliament has a total of 555 MPs. These include 352 constituency representatives, 146 District Women Representatives, 10 Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces Representatives, five, Representatives of the Youth, five Representatives of Persons with Disabilities, five Representatives of Workers, five Representatives of Older Persons and 27 Ex-Officio Members.

The move by MPs to increase their salaries and allowances comes amidst the push by health workers such as allied health professions, nurses and midwives; as well as other scientists such as science teachers to have their salaries increased starting July 2022 when the 2022-23 Financial Year starts. President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s cabinet has since made a decision on how much money science teachers will be earning every month starting July 2022. (Read Story Here).
