SAD! Veteran Mbarara Journalist Claire Choppa Dead

Veteran Mbarara journalist Claire Choppa is dead. Claire Choppa, real name Clare Ekiyasiimire Caroline, breathed her last in the morning of Sunday, June 29, 2025. 

The Pearl Times has learnt that Claire Choppa was rushed to Divine Mercy Hospital in Mbarara where she was referred to Mbarara Regional Hospital.

She breathed her last as she was being rushed to the regional referral hospital, The Pearl Times was further told.

Claire Choppa previously worked at Radio West as a presenter where she was popular during the station’s early years.

By the time of leaving the station, she had served as the manager.

During the heydays of Radio West’s popularity, Claire Choppa worked alongside popular names like Tuguragara Matojo and incumbent Mbarara City mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi.

Claire Choppa was married to James Kabagambe, a long serving Radio West presenter.

She was manager at Greater African Radio and hosted the Biribita Okwe? show on deputy speaker Thomas Tayebwa’s Tayari West TV by the time of her death.

She had also started a show

She had also indicated that she wanted to run for Mbarara City MP position in the 2026 general elections.

The eldest of the children of Henry Rumanzi’s nine children, Claire Choppa hailed from Rukungiri. With Claire Choppa’s demise, only six of nine children of Rumanzi remain.

Details of Claire Choppa’s cause of death were not readily available but The Pearl Times has been told that she succumbed to high blood pressure.

May the soul of Claire Choppa Caroline Ekiyasiimire rest in peace.
