Tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia’s son Rajiv Ruparelia had flown from London to attend Ex-Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera’s son’s wedding as groomsman, it has emerged.
When the accident happened, Rajiv Ruparelia was driving from his home in Kololo to Munyonyo with the intention of joining the wedding entourage in the morning, according to Andrew Mwenda, who spoke for the Ruparelia family after the sad news broke.
The son of Buteera, Jonathan Bahizi Buteera, was scheduled to wed Liz Mutoni. The archbishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda, Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, was expected to officiate at the ceremony, according to an official order of service seen by The Pearl Times.
Rajiv was supposed to be one of the seven groomsmen for Buteera’s son, his friend business partner.
But Rajiv Ruparelia did not make it to the wedding scheduled for Saturday, 03 May 2025. As he drove at about 1am on Saturday, his car, a white Nissan GTR registration number UAT 638L, hit a barrier on the road, overturned and caught fire at the Busabala flyover.
“On 03/05/2025 at 1:54 am, a white Nissan GTR (UAT 638L) crashed, overturned, and caught fire at the Busabala flyover. We have been informed that the driver was Rajiv Ruparelia (35). He died at the scene,” said Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire.
Part of the Najjanankumbi–Busabala Road upgrade project, the flyover is being worked on by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).
The now defunct Uganda National Roads Authority (Unra) awarded CSCEC a Shs258bn contract in 2021 for the project that should have multiple flyovers, pedestrian overpasses and upgraded roads upon completion.
