Uganda’s president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has only missed work once in nearly 40 years in power, a State House employee responsible for online publications has said.
Museveni is one of the longest serving presidents in the world.
Having ascended to power in 1986, Museveni has ruled Uganda for four decades nonstop. Now aged 80, Museveni rarely misses work. He’s also known to work long hours.
According to State House online editor Nelson Bwire, President Museveni has only missed work once.
“President Museveni has missed going to work just once in his presidential career (8th June 2024,” noted Bwire.
“One time, handlers deliberately made programs eliminating Saturdays, he responded by taking the whole weekend on duty including visiting Jinja Bridge (April 19th, 2020).”
Yet Museveni is also one of the ‘poorly paid’ presidents in the world.
The president earns Shs3.6 million every month. When he had just got into power, Museveni’s salary was just Shs150,000.
That was the money he earned for a decade since becoming president.
“Between 1986 and 1995 I was getting Shs. 150,000. That was my salary. But I was the president of Uganda and Commander in Chief. Those who doubted it, some of them are not here,” Museveni said at a Uganda Prisons event in 2023.
“My authority doesn’t depend on the salary.
“I still get Shs 3.6 million and I give 20 per cent to the NRM Secretariat, leaving me with Shs2.7 million. But I am the president of Uganda. If you are not sure about that you will find out.”
