Uganda Police Force (UPF) has dismissed as ‘fake news’ a news report quoting Deputy Inspector General of Police ( DIGP) Maj. Gen. Lokech as advising Bobi Wine’s supporters to prepare their wills and coffins before joining street protests.
On March 09, Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi), the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, urged his supporters to engage in peaceful street protests.
Bobi Wine claims he polled 54 per cent of total votes cast in the January 14 election.
But official results indicate Bobi Wine garnered 35 per cent, way below incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s 58 per cent.
After Bobi Wine made his ‘next course of action’ announcement, an online publication quoted Maj Gen Lokech as warning the singer-turned-politician’s supporters planning to go to the streets to first prepare their coffins and wills.
But police has dismissed the report, asking the public to “disregard” it.
“A recent social media story… under the Headline “Prepare your wills and coffins before you come to the streets” that is attributed to the Deputy Inspector General of Police,( DIGP) Maj. Gen. Lokech, has been found to be false and misleading,” said police in a statement.
“Please disregard the FAKE story, as NO such statement was made by the DIGP. The statement does not also reflect the position of the Police.”
Police has since threatened to take “further necessary action” against the publication over the story.
