Kampala International University - KIU
Kampala International University (KIU) has broken its silence after a graduation fees circular purported to have been issued by the institution claimed that graduands would pay as high as Shs1.3m to be able to make the final list.
The purported circular, addressed to “all graduands,” claimed that students preparing for graduation were required to complete various financial obligations before receiving clearance.
It listed a UGX1 million graduation fee, a UGX20,000 document certification fee and additional laboratory charges depending on the programme.
According to the document, students in programmes without practical subjects would allegedly pay UGX1.02 million, while those in programmes with practical subjects would pay UGX1.32 million.
Students in SOMAC and ICT programmes were allegedly required to pay as much as UGX1.62 million, owing to a purported UGX600,000 laboratory fee.
The circular further claimed that the laboratory charges were calculated at UGX55,000 per semester for six semesters for programmes with practical subjects, and UGX100,000 per semester for SOMAC and ICT students.
It also warned that students with damaged or lost laboratory equipment would have to replace the equipment or pay for it before receiving graduation clearance.
Those with lost or unreturned library books were similarly told to return them or pay the full replacement cost.
The document claimed that “final clearance cards and inclusion in the graduation booklet will only be provided after all applicable fees and outstanding institutional obligations have been fully settled.”
However, KIU has now rejected the entire communication. The university issued the clarification after a document dated October 3, 2026, began circulating online under the subject “Final Graduation Fees and Clearance Requirements.”
In a statement posted on its official X account, the university said: “Kampala International University wishes to inform all students, staff, and the general public that a circular circulating online about ‘Final Graduation Fees and Clearance Requirements’ is FAKE.”
KIU further stated: “The University has not issued such a communication through the Graduation Secretariat, Finance Department, or any official KIU channel.”
The university urged students and the public not to rely on the circulating document.
“We urge all graduands to rely strictly on,” KIU said, before listing “Official KIU social media pages,” “The University website” and “Verified administrative offices.”
The university concluded with a direct warning, telling stakeholders to “please disregard the fake document.”
The clarification means that the graduation fees and clearance figures contained in the circulating document should not be treated as official KIU charges.
Students preparing for graduation have instead been advised to obtain any payment or clearance information directly from the university’s verified administrative channels.
