The Next Media Legal Department, led by Obadia Ismail, Chief of Legal and Regulatory Compliance, has responded to Isaac Ssemakadde’s notice of intention to sue over ‘Bang the Gold’ story.
On May 06, 2025, Uganda Law Society (ULS) President Ssemakadde, through Mukiibi and Kyeyune Advocates, wrote to Kin Kariisa, the Chief Executive Officer of Next Media Group based at Naguru in Kampala, making his intention to sue and demand for $3m in damages and an apology clear.
“We act on behalf of Mr. Isaac K. Ssemakadde, S.C., in connection with the broadcast titled “BANG THE GOLD: RADICAL NEW GOLD SCAM” aired on 5 May 2025 across Next Media Group’s platforms, including television, radio, websites, apps and social media, and further amplified by your employees’ online posts,” wrote Mukiibi and Kyeyune Advocates.
“This #NBSInvestigates report contains false, defamatory, and damaging allegations against our client, accusing him of conspiracy and fraud without substantiation. These actions have caused significant reputational harm, emotional distress, and financial loss.”
Ssemakadde’s lawyers listed their client’s grievances as publication of defamatory statements through speculative and unsubstantiated claims; unauthorised use of copyrighted material belonging to our client; unlawful interception and disclosure of a bank statement and private telephone conversations; and misappropriation of our client’s image and voice for sensationalist purposes.
The ULS president’s other complaints against Next Media include dissemination of a m@licious narrative intended to tarnish our client’s reputation; illicit acquisition and publication of confidential bank information and police investigation details; and consequent loss of professional opportunities and severe emotional distress.
Ssemakadde gave Kin Kariisa 14 days within which to resolve the matter “amicably and avoid litigation.
He demanded “a full retraction and unqualified public apology, broadcast during prime time across all Next Media Group platforms and published on all associated social media accounts” “payment of USD 3,000,000 (United States Dollars Three Million Only) as compensatory and punitive damages for the harm caused.”
The ULS boss also demanded “immediate cessation of any further broadcast or publication of the offending material” as well as “preservation of all relevant evidence, including but not limited to broadcast footage, internal communications, and source materials related to the report.”
Ssemakadde’s lawyers threatened a lawsuit against Next Media if they do not seek amicable resolutions to the matter.
“Should you fail to comply with these demands within the stipulated period, our client reserves the right to initiate legal proceedings seeking compensatory and punitive damages, injunctive relief, and a court-ordered retraction, without further notice,” Mukiibi & Kyeyune Advocates wrote.
“We strongly encourage a prompt and cooperative resolution to avoid escalation.”
In a reply to Ssemakadde’s intention to sue, Next Media Legal Department, led by Obadia Ismail, Chief of Legal and Regulatory Compliance, told the Uganda Law Society president, “please sue.”
“We act for and on behalf of Next Media Group herein after referred to as our client on whose instructions we address you as hereunder,” wrote Ismail.
“We acknowledge receipt of your “Notice of Intention to Sue” in respect to “BANG THE GOLD: RADICAL NEW GOLD SCAM” #NBS Investigates, wherein you state that you act on behalf of Mr, Isaac K Ssemakadde, S.C., to wit we respond; Actori incumbit onus probandi, for every party is dominus litis; whether success follows is another matter altogether.”
