PLE RESULTS: Over 97,000 Candidates Fail PLE, Advised to Repeat P7

A total of 97,109 candidates have failed the 2022 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) and will either repeat or give up on formal education, results released today by the Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) have indicated.

These tens of thousands of learners came in Division U (Ungraded) and do not qualify for admission to secondary schools or any other post-primary education institution.

The failure rate stands at 12 per cent, which is about two points higher than that of 2020 PLE, which was at 10.2 per cent or 74,878 candidates. This means that more candidates — 22,231 more, to be exact — failed this year, compared to the previous sitting.

Those who have failed have been advised to repeat, with Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Ugandan first lady and Minister of Education and Sports telling those who scored Division U to return to class and improve their performance so they can proceed to the next level.

But given that more candidates sat in the 2022 sitting compared to the previous years, overall, more pupils passed and qualify to join the post-primary institutions than the previous year.

“Furthermore, in 2022, more candidates obtained Division 1 and Division 2 than in 2020. The overall pass levels are comparable between the two years. In terms of numbers, 714,702 candidates passed the PLE compared to 659,910 the previous year,” said Uneb executive secretary and director Dan Odongo.

More reporting on PLE Results follows.
