There was confusion in Masaka on Sunday, January 12, 2025, as groups aligned to National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine and Democratic Alliance (DA) principal Mathias Mpuuga fought over former Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya’s body.
NUP ‘foot soldiers’ successfully blocked police pallbearers from carrying Ssegirinya’s body to a venue designated by parliament for a special funeral session leading to the burial of Ssegirinya’s body.
The venue the police pallbearers were taking the body was Butale Playground where the state and Parliament had teamed up with Mpuuga to plan a funeral to honour Ssegirinya.
But mourners belonging to the Bobi Wine group insisted that Ssegirinya’s body would not be taken anywhere but would remain at the fallen MP’s ancestral home in Butale Village, Masaka.
Even when Ssegirinya’s mother Justin Nakajumba advised that the body be taken to Butale playground, NUP officials and foot soldiers would not hear of that.
In their view, taking Ssegirinya’s body to the playground for an event organized by Mpuuga, Parliament and the Museveni state would be equivalent to disrespecting the deceased’s will.
Two funeral proceedings went on at two separate venues, one with the body and the other without.
Ssegirinya died on Thursday. On Friday, January 10, Parliament held a special sitting to pay tribute to Ssegirinya.
However, most Museveni ministers and MPs refused to attend. MP Abdu Katuntu had to be the acting prime minister for a few minutes and moved the motion to honour Ssegirinya. (See Details Here and There).
A Museveni minister told Ugandans blaming Ssegirinya’s death on the prolonged imprisonment and denial of bail to shut up, saying Allah had decided it was time to die. Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi narrated Ssegirinya’s hard fight with the Museveni state. See Details Here and There.
Meanwhile, Uganda Law Society (ULS) President Isaac Ssemakadde is under fire and being blasted by a section of Ugandans after he thanked Speaker Anita Among for Muhammad Ssegirinya seat, as reported Here
