NUP Card Battle: MP Derrick Nyeko ‘Retires’ after One Term

As the NUP card battle intensifies, MP Derrick Nyeko says he will not be running to retain his Makindye East position, taking a break from elective parliamentary politics.

Derrick Nyeko has announced his decision not to seek reelection on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

In his announcement, Nyeko said he had not betrayed his voters in the last five years as a first time – and now a one-term MP.  He also bragged about his disdain for corruption.

“I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to all who have believed in me throughout the years I have been entrusted with leadership. It is with a heart full of joy that I have served you with honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of your vote,” he wrote.

“I remain the man of no corruption, no problems.”

Derrick Nyeko said he knew how disappointed his supporters would be because of his decision but he said he had deeply reflected on the same.

“I know this decision may not be easy for my team and supporters to receive, especially after our strong belief that we would once again win the Makindye East MP seat,” further wrote Nyeko.

“However, after deep reflection, I have made the difficult decision not to offer myself for election in the coming polls.

This choice does not diminish the journey we have walked together, nor the victories we have achieved. It is my hope that the spirit of unity, resilience, and service to our people will remain stronger than ever.”

Reports suggest that Derrick Nyeko had learnt that he was not the favorite to win the National Unity Platform (NUP) card for the 2026 parliamentary elections.
