Teachers across Uganda are set to receive higher monthly salaries starting July 2026 following the latest government salary enhancement announced by the Minister of Public Service, Gen. Katumba Wamala.
Speaking while outlining the government’s latest pay review, Gen. Katumba Wamala revealed the new salary figures for primary school teachers, graduate arts teachers, primary school headteachers and arts-based secondary school headteachers.
“The biggest highlight of our presentation today is the salary enhancement for teachers,” Gen. Katumba Wamala said.
He began with primary school teachers holding Grade III certificates, saying their monthly salary will increase significantly.
“Starting with the primary school teacher, a certificate holder, that’s Grade Three. That one’s moving from four hundred and ninety-nine thousand six hundred and eighty-four (UGX 499,684) to seven hundred thousand (UGX 700,000),” Gen. Katumba Wamala said.
The minister also announced a major increase for primary school headteachers.
“A head teacher of primary school (will move) from seven hundred and seventy-seven thousand five hundred and twelve (UGX 777,512) to one million five hundred and thirty-seven thousand nine hundred and seventy-six (UGX 1,537,976),” he said.
Graduate arts teachers are also among those benefiting from the salary enhancement.
“Graduate arts teacher (will move) from seven hundred and forty-five thousand (UGX 745,000) to one million three hundred and fifty-seven thousand nine hundred and sixty-four (UGX 1,357,964),” Gen. Katumba Wamala announced.
For secondary school headteachers with an arts background, the minister said the monthly pay will also rise substantially.
“A head teacher of arts background in a secondary school (will move) from two million two hundred and seventy thousand nine hundred and eighty-four (UGX 2,270,984) to three million one hundred and sixty-two thousand five hundred (UGX 3,162,500),” he said.
Gen. Katumba Wamala emphasized that these adjustments form part of the government’s latest salary enhancement programme targeting the education sector.
“That’s the salary enhancement in the bracket of teachers,” the minister concluded.
The salary increments are expected to take effect from July 2026, marking another phase in the government’s efforts to improve teachers’ welfare and narrow the pay gap within the public service.
