Anita Among
After senior Parliament officials, including Communications Director Chris Obore, were remanded by the Anti-Corruption Court, attention has now shifted to a bigger question: Will former Speaker Anita Among be the next high-profile figure to be brought before the court?
That question has gained momentum following claims from sources familiar with the ongoing Inspectorate of Government (IG) investigations, who say prosecutors could be preparing the next phase of the case.
While there has been no official confirmation that Among will appear in court, the speculation comes amid an intensifying anti-corruption probe that has already ensnared several senior Parliament officials.
Thursday’s arrest and court appearance of Chris Obore and other Parliament officials has only intensified speculation that investigators could soon widen the prosecution to include more senior figures within Parliament.
The possibility of Among facing court proceedings follows weeks of uncertainty over whether President Yoweri Museveni would approve criminal proceedings against one of the ruling NRM’s most influential politicians.
Reports suggest that the IG has already completed its investigations and submitted its findings to the President. Museveni has remained publicly silent despite growing speculation over Among’s fate, with sources saying he preferred allowing investigations to run their full course before any action was taken.
Investigators had reportedly examined allegations of abuse of office, money laundering, unexplained wealth and irregular recruitment of parliamentary staff.
It should be remembered that security agencies searched properties linked to Among after receiving intelligence suggesting large sums of cash were being kept there, although reports claimed that the investigators did not recover the evidence they had anticipated.
The speculation surrounding what could happen to Among comes against the backdrop of dramatic events that have unfolded over the past several weeks. In May, joint security teams and investigators mounted coordinated searches at her residences in Nakasero and Kigo as part of a state investigation into allegations of corruption, money laundering and illicit enrichment.
The lengthy operations, which attracted nationwide attention, saw detectives spend hours inside the properties while restricting access to the compounds. The investigations had been sanctioned as authorities sought evidence linked to the probe.
Just days after the searches, Among announced that she was withdrawing from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament. In a statement, she said the decision followed “wide consultations and deep introspection” and was intended to preserve harmony within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). She also pledged to cooperate fully with all ongoing investigations.
Her withdrawal dramatically reshaped the contest for Parliament’s top office, effectively ending months of speculation over whether she would seek another term despite the growing legal and political pressure surrounding her.
Even after stepping aside from the Speakership race, public debate over Among’s future has continued, with questions on whether investigations would end with the searches or culminate in criminal proceedings, especially after reports emerged that investigators had widened inquiries into individuals considered close to the former Speaker.
Days ago, the Iteso Cultural Union leadership, headed by Emorimor Papa Paul Sande Emolot, visited Among and appealed for a fair and expeditious resolution of the case. The cultural leader urged investigators and the courts to ensure that justice is administered impartially, emphasizing that every Ugandan is entitled to due process regardless of status or political office. At the same time, he stressed that the law should be allowed to take its course without interference.
The visit added another dimension to an investigation that has become as much a political story as a legal one, with religious, cultural and political leaders closely following every new development.
Against that backdrop, Thursday’s detention of Chris Obore and other senior Parliament officials has inevitably fuelled fresh speculation over whether Among could soon find herself before the Anti-Corruption Court as well.
For now, the question remains unanswered. But with the investigation gathering pace and prosecutors moving against other senior Parliament officials, attention is firmly fixed on whether Anita Among will become the next prominent figure to appear in the dock.
