NBS TV journalist Julius Kitone is among eight people who were killed in a Friday, February 13, 2026 evening accident on the Mbarara–Lyantonde highway in western Uganda.
One person was also critically injured in the Friday, 13 February 2026 accident that happened when a passenger taxi (a Toyota Hiace) had a head-on collision with a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer.
According to police, the collision took place at around 6:30 p.m. local time at Kibega I village in Kiruhura District.
The driver of the taxi, which was travelling from Mbarara and heading towards Lyantonde, tried to overtake in a corner when the collision happened.
According to Rwizi Region police spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira, the deceased and the injured were all occupants of the Toyota Hiace.
“Police in Kiruhura district has today the 13/02/2026 at around 1830/c registered a fatal accident at Kibega 1 village along Mbarara Lyantonde highway… that claimed 08 lives, injuring 01 victim,” said Kasasira in a statement.
“It’s alleged that the Toyota Hiace was from Mbarara headed to Lyantonde while the trailer was from Lyantonde headed to Mbarara direction. The Toyota Hiace driver over took from a corner and ended up colliding with the trailer that was coming from the opposite direction in its lane.”
Preliminary findings suggest that the accident was caused by reckless driving.
