The sub regions where Uganda’s most educated tribes come from have been revealed, with the gap between the most educated sub region standing at 60 per cent.

In the past 10 years, Uganda has registered a two per cent improvement in literacy rates, rising from 72 per cent in 2014 to 74 per cent this year, final results from the National population and housing Census 2024 have indicated.

More males can read and write. Up to 77 per cent of males in Uganda are literate compared to 72 per cent of the females.

The tribes in Buganda sub region were the most educated in Uganda, with literacy rates standing at 85.5 per cent. The means that up to 14.5 per cent of residents of Buganda sub region are illiterate — or do not know how to read and write.

Tribes in Ankole sub region followed with literacy rate at 78.9 per cent. This means that every two in 10 people in Ankole can neither read nor write.

In third position on the list of most educated tribes of Uganda are those occupying the Elgon sub region. Here, literacy rate is at 76.1 per cent. The literacy rate for the tribes in the Kigezi sub region is similar to that of Elgon. For each of these two sub regions, nearly 24 out of every 100 people are illiterate.

Following the tribes of Elgon and Kigezi sub regions on the list Uganda’s most educated tribes is Lango sub region, with its literacy rate of 74.9 per cent.  In Lango, 25 of every 100 people are illiterate.

In the sixth place of Uganda’s most educated tribes are those from Teso sub region where the literacy rate is at 73.5 per cent. This means that 26.5 per cent of the people making up the tribes of Teso sub region do not know how to read and write.

Following Teso is Busoga sub region where the literacy rate is at 71.7 per cent, meaning that about 28 out of every 100 people in Busoga sub region are not educated.

In position number eight of Uganda’s most educated tribes are those which live in Acholi sub region where the literacy rate is at 70.8 per cent. This means that nearly three in every 10 of the people living in the sub region cannot read and write.

Acholi sub region is followed by Tooro where the literacy rate is at 70.4 per cent, completing the list of sub regions whose literacy rates are above 70 per cent.

Tooro is followed by the tribes in Bukedi sub region where literacy rate is at 68.9 per cent. This means 31 in every 100 people in Bukedi cannot read and write.

In the 11th position on the list of Uganda’s most educated tribes are those from Bunyoro sub region, with the literacy rate standing at 68.5 per cent, meaning that 31.5 of the people in the sub region can neither read nor write.

Following Bunyoro on the list of Uganda’s most educated tribes are those from West Nile where the literacy rate is at 60.6 per cent. This means that nearly four in every 10 people in the sub region can neither read nor write.
